Sacramento Electric School Bus Case Study
Following the V2G presentation by SMUD Senior Strategic Business Planner, Evan Speer, at the School Bus Consortium meeting on June 1, the California Energy Commission has now released their case study of the V2G Technology demonstration at the Twin Rivers School District in Sacramento.
Twin Rivers Unified School District (TRUSD) is a diverse school district serving students and families in the City of Sacramento. In 2017, Twin Rivers emerged as a pioneer and leader in school fleet electrification, becoming the first school district in the nation to deploy zero-emission electric school buses. Today, the fleet is one of the largest public school electric bus fleets in the country, with 68 electric buses as well as beginning to electrify its non-bus “white fleet” of 138 light and medium-duty vehicles. As TRUSD expanded its bus fleet and array of chargers, there became an urgent need for innovative solutions to reduce capital and operating costs of fleet charging. In November of 2021, Ford Pro received a grant from the California Energy Commission’s (CEC) Clean Transportation Program to demonstrate their innovative smart charging platform with TRUSD’s fleet of electric school buses. The overarching goal of the BESTFIT grant is to accelerate the adoption of EV and smart charging technology by schools and similar fleet operators across California and beyond. |
