The City of Sacramento’s mishap has turned into a winning opportunity for American River College (ARC)! When one of the City's Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) refuse trucks was involved in a serious accident and totaled, the City didn't just sell it off for salvage. Instead, they made a thoughtful gift of the truck to ARC's Heavy-duty Technician Training Program.
The natural gas engine, electronic controls, hydraulics and other mechanical systems will allow ARC to continue to build and enhance their certificate programs for heavy-duty technicians in natural gas, hydraulics and other truck components. Until now, ARC did not have any of the natural gas components available for hands-on training. These components will also assist instructors in developing the lesson plans for the students, building on the current program by expanding the comprehension of clean natural gas diesel engine theory.
ARC students will learn to correctly disassemble and reassemble procedures for the natural gas engine components and systems, which includes the turbocharger, fuel injection system, valve train and engine head, flywheel, vibration dampener, and crank pulley, camshaft, timing gears and accessory drive, connection rod and piston, and cylinder liner.
Beyond the engine functions, this truck will be instrumental in helping to explain the functions and the operations of the different components of the basic hydraulic system, and it will give instructors the ability to demonstrate correct welding techniques for the natural gas applications, correct welding safety practices as well as the proper handling, use, and disposal of hazardous materials.
