Truck Idle Reduction Information

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), along with other members of the Sacramento Clean Cities Coalition have embarked on a number of Idle Reduction projects aimed at reducing local air emissions and providing truck drivers and fleets with opportunities to reduce operating costs.  We hope that these projects can serve as a model for other communities wishing to reduce truck idling.

What is Idle Reduction?

Truck drivers live in their trucks while driving cross-country to deliver freight.  They need power to operate air conditioning, provide heat, or to operate appliances including refrigerators and entertainment systems.  Truckers are required to take 10-hour rest breaks every day, and often these involve staying in the truck.  While resting, it is common practice to idle the main truck engine to power these “hotel loads” during rest periods.  The truck engine at idle consumes a lot of fuel.  There are more efficient ways to provide power during rests than idling however.  Please see the presentation for more details.

Accomplishments:

Details of some of our activities at SMUD and around the Sacramento region related to idle reduction include:

  • Installation of Shorepower at the Sacramento 49er Travel Plaza

  • Completion of an on truck equipment demonstration with funding from EPRI, EPA and nine trucking fleets

  • Installation of Shorepower at Ozark Trucking Terminal

  • Conducting an Idle Reduction Technology Fair at the Sacramento 49er travel Plaza. We have also compared ideas and cooperated extensively with NYSERDA in promoting the idea and use of Shorepower as the most cost effective approach to truck idle reduction.

Current Projects:

We are presently performing a Truck Idle Reduction using Shorepower – a solution for communities project.  This multifaceted project is funded by DOE, CEC, SMUD, SMAQMD, NATSO, NYSERDA, Xantrex and the Sacramento 49er.  Watch for details to be posted on this web site.

Projects in Other Regions

The New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) has been a strong leader in implementing alternatives to idling.  Details of some of their projects can be found here.

How can communities create Idle Reduction Projects?

It is easy, actually, because we all like clean air.  Truck Idle Reduction can save truckers a lot of money, especially if shorepower is used instead of idling.  APU’s and Gen Sets also save money, as do battery packs and inverters to run appliances and air conditioners. Here are some basic facts about heavy-duty truck idling issues.

Links and information

These links might be useful if you are looking for additional information.  Also, we’ve included a few interesting documents about Long Haul Truck Idling.

Emissions Calculations

Idling long haul trucks have emission rates that differ from those developed for most emission modeling which are based on the driving cycle.  These two EPA reports provide idling emission rates and fuel consumption numbers that may be useful in calculation of emissions or fuel savings from idling reduction.  It should be emphasized that these do not necessarily represent 2007 engines, which will likely have after treatment systems and will hopefully be cleaner.
